This course is intended for marine engine and deck officers involved in the operations and management of bilge water treatment system onboard ships. It covers lessons & instructions governing regulations, system components, and operational methods & routines for the proper treatment and disposal of bilge water & waste oil, with emphasis on correct recording of operations in the Oil Record Book.

COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
The course aims to provide thorough knowledge and understanding of existing regulations and operational requirements for the proper storage, treatment and discharge of bilge water & waste oil, in view of ensuring regulatory and environmental compliance.

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the underlying principles and requirements contained in MARPOL 73/78, Annex I concerning filtering and discharge of oil or oily mixtures
  • Describe the components of Oily Water Separation (OWS) System
  • Explain methods of treatment and handling of bilge water & waste oil within the context of the regulations
  • Explain the flow of operational processes of bilge water system covering storage, treatment, and discharge of bilge water/oily waste
  • Correctly record the various operations in Oil Record Book Part 1, using the correct codes, item numbers, and entries
  • Explain how Port State Control inspections are conducted related to OWS System
