Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Tanker Cargo and Ballast Handling Simulator
Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Tanker Cargo and Ballast Handling Simulator
This training course is intended for deck officers and ratings who have specific duties and responsibilities related to cargo or cargo equipment on LNG tankers.
The training is essentially a practical course and consists of a series of exercises structured around the operation of the cargo and ballast systems of an LNG tanker and carried out in conjunction with LNG Simulator (Spherical Containment System or Membrane Containment system).
The aim of this course is to simulate LNG tanker cargo and ballast operations using an approved simulator and is based on IMO Model Course 1.36 which covers the applicable knowledge, understanding and proficiency (KUPs) in Table A-V/1-2-2 of the STCW Code, as amended.
Upon successful completion the course, the trainee will gain knowledge and skills to be able to make a more effective contribution to ship safety, safe operation and control of the cargo and ballast system of an LNG tanker, and enhance protection of the marine environment. Those who shall successfully complete the course should be able to demonstrate:
• familiarization with cargo handling on board an LNG tanker during normal and emergency operations;
• a greater awareness of the need for proper pre-planning, the use of checklists and the timescales involved in the various LNG cargo and/or ballast handling operations;
• an enhanced awareness to apply proper and safe procedures at all times when carrying out the various operations on board an LNG tanker;
• an acquisition of experience in identifying typical cargo and/or ballast related operational problems (and solving them) on board an LNG tanker; and
• an improvement in the ability to make decisions which promote safety and protect the marine environment.
Emphasis of lessons & instruction shall deal with the following subjects and training areas:
1. LNG Tanker Familiarization
2. Ballast Operations
3. LNG Operation Sequence Overview
4. Post-delivery (Yard / Dry-dock) Pre-Departure Operations - Stripping and Gas Freeing
5. Emergency Procedures Simulator Activities & Exercises shall cover:
• Familiarization, De-ballasting, Cargo pumps and pumping arrangements, Inerting, Gassing up, Cooling down, Loading, Pressure maintenance, Boil-off, Unloading, Stripping and cleaning system, System to make the tank liquid-free, Warm up, Gas freeing, and Emergency cargo valve operations
