Engine-Room Management Simulator Course (For Operational Level Engine Officers)


This course is intended for operational level engine officers. The training is essentially a practical course and consists of a series of exercises structured around the operation of the machinery of a modern merchant ship suitable for operational level functions, using an approved simulator.

The course is based on IMO Model Course 2.07 and covers training using an engine-room simulator specified as one method of demonstrating competence in Column 3 of Tables A-III/1 of the STCW Code.

Upon successful completion of the course, the trainee will gain knowledge and skills related to operation, supervising and monitoring the safe operation and control of ship’s machinery, suitable for operational level engine officer’s functions.

Those who shall successfully complete the course should be able to obtain:

• familiarization with the use of instrumentation and controls in the engine-room of modern merchant ships;

• an awareness of the need for proper pre-planning, the use of checklists and the time scales involved in starting up propulsion plant machinery;

• experience in identifying operational problems and troubleshooting; and

• ability of logical decision-making which promotes operational safety.

Emphasis of lessons & instruction shall deal with the following areas:

1. Engine-Room Simulator Familiarization

2. Operation of Plant Machinery

3. Maintain a Safe Engineering Watch

4. Operate Electrical, Electronic and Control Systems 

Entry Requirement / Target Group:

ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP: Entry to the course is open to engine officers who intend to improve their knowledge and understanding of the operation of the machinery of a modern merchant ship suitable for operational level functions.
